Berlin: An Exciting City

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Tiergarten has many playgrounds and welcoming open spaces. It is also possible to hire rowing boats on the Neur See. Along Strasse des 17.Juni, the main road which runs through the park, there is a busy, buzzing flea market every Saturday and Sunday, which sells art and other interesting things. In the furthest bottom left corner of the park, Berlin’s beautiful zoo can be found and its large aquarium. As well as this, the Gem?ldegalerie in Matth?ikirchplatz runs Sunday afternoon tours for kids! There are plenty of apartments in Berlin and hotels in Berlin to be found in this part of the city

The Gem?ldegalerie can be found at Stauffenbergstrasse 40, taking the metro U2, S1, S2, S26 to Potsdamer Platz. It is open 10am-pm, Tue, Wed, Fri-Sun; 10am-10pm Thur and admission is €8; €4 concessions. The gallery has a sizeable collection of English, Spanish and Italian art but the real gems are the Dutch and Flemish art.

The Gemaldegalerie houses 20 Rembrandts – the best of which are considered the portrait of preacher and merchant Cornelis Claesz Anslo and his wife, and an electric Samson confronting his father-in-law. Other gems include a version of Botticelli’s Venus Rising and Corregio’s Leda with the Swan. To accompany you round the gallery there is a really useful free English audio guide.

The Berlin zoo was opened in 1841 and is Germany’s oldest zoo and with almost 14,000 animals, it is considered one of the most important zoos in the world today. It also houses more endangered species than any other zoo, save for the zoo in Antwerp. Here you will find creatures great and small, including hippopotami, elephants and penguins. This well designed zoo is perfect to visit on a rainy day with the children, as much of it is indoors. The zoo was designed by Martin Lichtenstein and Peter Joseph Lenn? and it is really striking, with pretty landscaping, cafes and architecture. The highlight of the zoo over the last few years has been the polar bear “Knut” who was born on 5th December 2006 and was the first polar bear to be born in Zoo Berlin in over 30 years. In 2004, the bear enclosure was increased to make more room, as has the birds of prey enclosure and the blah. Make sure you visit the crocodile enclosure and the Elephant Gate, which can be found on Olof-Palme-Platz. Visit; http://www.zoo-berlin.de/en/ for more information and why not book your accommodation Berlin too?.

Kreuzberg is definitely worth a visit as it is full to bursting with pretty boutiques, high quality good value restaurants and a child friendly atmosphere. Kreuzberg is home to the Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, particularly enjoyable for older children, it gives an insight into the lives of those living in East Berlin, and displays the old cars and balloons people used to try and escape from the DDR by getting around the Berlin wall. What To See and Do When You Visit Oban

By Travel Guru On October 31st, 2008

Oban has much to offer its visitors. This is a very historic place and there are many castles and standing stones to be visited and explored. There is plenty to keep you occupied here day and night. So you will find that your stay in Oban will be a very memorable and enjoyable one.

Below we take a look at some of the attractions that you can spend time at when you visit this wonderful town whether for a long weekend or for a week’s holiday.

1.     Slate Islands – Now a heritage trust site where you can see how slate was quarried and then exported around the world. Slate was quarried from this site for more than three hundred years and during your visit you will learn how this was done by looking at the working models they have on display. The site is open 7 days from March to September.

2.    Atlantic Bridge – This bridge was built in 1792 after the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 revealed that transporting large numbers of soldiers by ferry was difficult. The bridge links Seil Island to the Scottish mainland and has sufficient height to allow sailing boats to pass below it. It’s main other claim to fame is that it is the only bridge to actually cross the Atlantic ocean.

3.    Kilmartin Glen – This is a very important ancient monument site and you can find Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and early Christian Settlements. But along with all these settlements for you to explore this is now the only place left in Britain where wild raised bogs are made.

4.    Sea Fari Adventures – This attraction gives you the chance to come into close contact with some of the Argyll coasts’ wildlife. During your visit you will hopefully get to see some whales, seals, dolphins and porpoises along with the native deer and eagles. You can spend as much as a whole day at sea whale watching if you want to.

5.    Oban Chocolate Company – This is a place that both adults and children alike will enjoy visiting. Your factory tour will allow you to see the chocolatiers at work producing their delicious handmade chocolates. Then afterwards spend time in their cafe sampling some of the cakes and hot chocolate that they make.

6.    Oban Distillery – This is a place that those who like something a little more alcoholic will enjoy. You can learn how they produce their 14 year old single malt whisky. Your admission includes a tour of the distillery and food afterwards. As well as a whisky related gift after your tour.

When you visit Oban, choose your Oban hotel here.

Southwestern United States Tours – How to Get Ready

By Travel Guru On October 31st, 2008

Here are some preparation tips-suggestions to get the most from your Southwestern America Culinary vacation.

Have a Sumptuous Appetite
The optimal way to do justice to your food trip is to have a big appetite. What’s the point of paying for the chance to taste the best food of a given area or culture when your tummy can’t accommodate more than one bite?

Of course, possessing a big appetite doesn’t mean starving yourself the day before.

Just make sure you don’t overeat the day before your trip. If possible, take a pill to ensure your stomach’s certifiably empty for the food fest ahead.

Prepare for the Heat
Spicy is a term often associated with the Southwest in more ways than one.

Firstly, a majority of the tastes of Southwest food are especially spicy. Chimichangas, nachos, taquitos, stuffed peppers, chile relleno, chili con carne, and salsa are just a few of the popular dishes that could get you hopping mad out of the restaurant with burning taste buds. If you’re not accustomed at eating spicy stuff, make sure you have a small canister or jug of iced water with you at all times; there will be instances when you just can’t wait a second longer to cool your tongue off.

Second, Southwestern states are not particularly the coldest areas of the United States. The weather in this region, especially in Arizona and Texas, can be quite ovewhelming in its heat. You can’t beat Arizona tourism.  But be sure you’re dressed comfortably in light, airy clothing. Wearing a cap or sun visor as well as a pair of sun glasses can help protect you from the heat.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are always a possibility, so again, having a ready source of water with you at all times is vital.

Prepare for the Heat
Speaking of the heat, there are also certain characteristics of the weather that you might need to watch out for. Insects are a nominal but annyoing problem, but one that a mosquito repellent can often address. Rain could also be a cause of trouble, but not if you come
ready with a raincoat and umbrella.

Clothing
While we’re on the subject of clothing, be sure to ask your vacation organizer if you’ll visit any place with a requisite dress code. Knowing what to dress can also help ensure that you pack light for your Southwest US tour.

Bring a First Aid Kit with You
Vacation planners always have first aid kits with them, but there’s no telling when you’ll find yourself alone and separated from your group. As such, it would do you no harm to have your own first aid kit with you.

Now, if you’ve considerable experience vacationing, you might already have a first aid kit packed with your things. There are, specifically, extra things you might add to your kit in consideration of “special dangers” you might face during your Southwest US tour.

If your vacation includes a trip to the desert, antidotes for snake bites and treatments for other kinds of bites (remember: scorpions and spiders can cause harm, too!). High altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS) is also a problem if your food tour includes a short but physical mountain climb.

Double Check Everything
Lastly, examine your vacation checklist a few days before you depart for your tour. Call your tour planner to ensure that everything’s fine in their side as well.

Looking for Tips About Vacations - Read Free Publications About Cornish Walk

A Cornish Walk: A Simple Tourist Activity, But An Absolute Must For An English Holiday

Cornwall has always been a favourite holiday destination and its dramatic coastline, picturesque villages, vibrant culture and sumptuous cuisine. For those visitors who have travelled to the region, the benefits of a Cornish holiday need no explaining, but for our international friends, who have yet to explore outside of London, a visit to Cornwall will give you a very different taste of English life.

Parts of the walk between St Agnes and the Jericho Valley have been trodden so often by my sturdy boots, that they practically know their own way. It’s one of my favourite stretches of coastal path for its spectacular views across the turquoise waters to the huge stretch of beach at Penhale

St Agnes was once a busy centre of mining activity, the relics of which are dotted all around this walk. Today it is still a very community-minded village with a friendly population boosted during the summer by the visitors attracted by the village’s charming unspoilt character, its beautiful coastline and popular beach. The village is well equipped for walkers, with some beautiful, quintessentially English cottages and hotels, and some superb restaurants which take advantage of Cornwall’s fantastic local produce.

On this walk you’ll first head southwards on the coast path up a fairly steep climb away from the picturesque Trevaunance Cove. Just above the beach if you peer down at low tide you’ll see the scattered stones of the former harbour walls, deposited when storms swept it away in 1915/16. At a higher tide with a gentle swell you may see one or two of the resident seals putting in an appearance.

Continuing along the coast path you’ll be rewarded with amazing views. You’ll pass a number of capped mine shafts and a couple of benches where you can enjoy the view of Bawden Rocks, also known as Man and His Man. Every summer daring swimmers from the village swim the mile out to this rock and back.

After about half a mile along the coast path you head inland and up towards the Beacon, the 192 metre high hill that overlooks St Agnes. Legend has it that a giant called Bolster could stand with one foot on The Beacon and the other on Carn Brea six miles away. If you fancy a detour then trek up it for some fantastic views from Padstow in the north, to the clay country and south to St Ives.

Otherwise the route skirts the bottom of the Beacon, and then follows a path to St Agnes village. Here locals bustling about their day-to-day business will be brushing shoulders with day-trippers and holiday makers. Stop for a browse around some of the fascinating arts and crafts galleries, or pause for a coffee outside the St Agnes Hotel. If you feel like staying overnight, there is some lovely holiday accommodation in the area, as well as a very high standard of local pubs and restaurants.

Tourist Activity and Stippy-Stappy

Next you’ll see the quirky row of sea captain’s cottages known as Stippy-Stappy, then follow the road for a short time before you descend off left into Trevellas Combe. Following a clear trickling stream through woodland, you’ll pass the isolated Jericho Cottage, once owned by renowned Cornish artist John Opie. Near here, we got a fright when a grass snake slithered across the path in front of us.

You emerge out of the valley at Blue Hills Tin Streams, where you can see a working water wheel and tin smelting in the traditional way. Then perhaps stop at Trevellas beach for a paddle. Head up the steep hill to the left of the beach. It’s a toughie this one, but there’s a strategically placed bench half way up!

You can get round this walk in a speedy two and half hours, but I think you should allow about four. In that time you’ll have journeyed through centuries of life in this colourful part of Cornwall and should go home with a real taste of how this friendly community has evolved in that time.

Your travel is destined to be a more pleasant thing if you know this checklist for packing for vacation.

Passport For You And Your Family

By Travel Guru On October 31st, 2008

Better get the latest information about your passport if you are thinking about travelling soon. Air travel between the United States and Canada has altered in the last few months and it’s got some individual scrambling to acquire a passeport. If you’ve been over the border by air in the past you know that you could get by with just a birth certificate and driver’s license. That is not the process anymore and if you’re searching for passport information there’s a lot to be found on Internet.

Whenever an individual wants to apply for one of these official government papers there’s a few things they are going to necessitate. One is an original of their confirmation of their nationality. For most of us this means a birth certificate. For others it may be their citizenship or immigration papers. All passport information Website will confirm this point, so find that document before you even begin the application process. In case you misplaced or lost this certificate, you’ll need to replace it first before you apply for a passport.

Pictures are naturally needed when you want to get a passport. Unfortunately you can’t take a beauty shot so you look fabulous in the image. There are very precise rules on the size of the photo and how you can look. The government’s passport information outlines these rules and it is best to visit a photo shop that specializes in passport images. The price is low and you can be sure that the photos will be adequate.

Vacations In Aberdeen And Worthwile Places To Visit

By Travel Guru On October 31st, 2008

Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland, in relationship to population numbers. Aberdeen’s buildings, since the mid eighteenth century, have been made using local grey granite and the city has a sandy coastline. This has led to the city being nicknamed the Granite City and also the Silver City with the Golden Sands. However in recent years the city has also gained the nicknames of the Energy Capital of Europe or the Oil Capital of Europe due to the discovery of oil in the North Sea. Aberdeen has benefitted greatly from the revenue generated by the oil industry and the support industries. Today Aberdeen is thoroughly modern and incredibly vibrant with a lively nighlife.

Aberdeen hotels are often booked by people visiting on business but also by various other types of people keen to take advantage of the many visitor attractions Aberdeen has to offer. Below you will find details of 3; Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Satrosphere Science Centre and Duthie Park Winter Gardens:

Aberdeen Maritime Museum

Aberdeen’s Maritime Museum is situated nearby the harbor, at the legendary Shiprow. There are stunning views across the harbour from the museum. The Maritime Museum resides in quite a few buildings, which include a former church and one of the oldest dwellings in Aberdeen. The museum has exhibits that cover everything to do with the oceanic environment, from the oil industry to the fishing boats. In essence, the museum tells the story of Aberdeen’s epic relationship with the ocean. Some of the collections contain ship plans, photographs, models and paintings donated by the most major of Aberdeen’s shipbuilders.

Duthie Park Winter Gardens

In 1881, Lady Elizabeth Duthie of Ruthrieston, gifted to the council, 44 acres of land. The land for the park was purchased, as a lasting memorial to her brother and uncle. In 1899, when the gardens were completed, they opened up to the public. However, in 1969 misfortune occurred and the greenhouses had to be knocked down and rebuilt. This was due to severe storm damgage. Today, one of Scotland’s favourite garden attractions are the David Welch Winter Gardens at Duthie Park, and also the largest indoor gardens in the whole of Europe. Each greenhouse has an important collection such as, the Tropical House, Japanese Garden, Fern House, Victorian House, Temperate House and Corridor of Perfumes.

Satrosphere Science Centre

One of the first science and discovery centers in Scotland was the, Satrosphere Science Center, in Aberdeen. This interactive, hands-on science center, has more than 50 exhibits and live science shows, and opened its’ doors to the public in 1988. Even though the center is aimed at school age children, the appeal of the exhibits is universal. The center is located in the old tram sheds, near to the beach, on Constitution Street. The aim is to inspire youngsters to become scientist’s, as interest in science courses in universities, is in decline. One of the favorite exhibits at the center is the famous giant soap bubble, where each child can be encircled within a magic bubble.

There are a great many other visitor attractions in the Aberdeen area which are well worth visiting and the above 3 were randomly chosen. If you are planning to spend some time in Aberdeen, Scotland then you will discover numerous quality Aberdeen hotels, or various other types of accommodation, available to book online.

Ayr (scotland) Vacations And Brilliant Places Definitely Worth Visiting

By Travel Guru On October 30th, 2008

Ayr is the most populated town on the coast of the Firth of Clyde and, for hundreds of years, it was an important trading center and seaport, surprisingly, at one time, it was nearly the same as Glasgow in size and importance to the country of Scotland. Ayrs tourist trade really started in the nineteenth century. Nowadays Ayr is still a popular place for tourists to stay due, in part, to its relationship with Robert Burns but also because of the great many visitor attractions to be discovered in and about Ayr. We have listed below information about 3 popular tourist attractions worth visiting; Greenan Castle, The Electric Brae and The Auld Brig.

Greenan Castle

Roger De Scalebroc built a fortress, during the 12th century which was later the site of Greenan Castle. In 1476, the Lands of Greenan were lost by John, Lord of the Isles and Earl of Ross, for his treason against James III. The Lands of Greenan were then passed on to William Douglas, who was the son of Archibald, Earl of Angus, by James IV, in 1493. The rectangular tower house was built in the beginning of the 17th century, by John Kennedy Baltersan, and the original fortess was swallowed up in this construction. Erected on the edge of a sheer coastal cliff, Greenan Castle is in a beautiful situation, with magnificent views. Not far from the castle is a large stone, where the Picts and the Scots allegedly signed the peace treaty.

The Auld Brig

The Auld Brig is not the only bridge in Ayr, in fact, over the centuries there have been 3. The others were the New Brig and the old iron footbridge. Long before the Auld Brig was built, in 1470, the only way over the river, and into town, was via a wood built bridge. In 1788, the New Brig was built, but tragically was washed away during a flood about a century later. Once again the Auld Brig became the main crossing until another New Bridge could be built (1878). A lot of people know of the Auld Brig thanks to Robert Burns, who wrote the poem, ‘The Brigs of Ayr’.

The Electric Brae

This natural phenomenon can be found in Ayrshire, Scotland. The Electric Brae is a gravity hill, where a stationary vehicle on the road, with the brakes off, will appear to move steadily uphill. This is purely an optical illusion which is due to the way the ground lies. There once were metal markers on the road marking the spot, but these have now been replaced with a stone cairn. The stone cairn is also engraved with an explanation of the Electric Brae. Originally people thought the phenomenon was due to an electric or magnetic attraction within the Brae, hence the name.

If you are thinking about having a Scottish vacation and you wish to base it in Ayr you might want to book your accommodation online and you will find listings of accommodation and hotels in Ayr at http://www.ayrhotelscotland.com.
