Travel is a wonderful past time albeit an expensive one at times. That hasn’t stopped us in our pursuit of finding the dream location for our vacations or discovering the wonderful surprises that different cultures have to offer our senses.

Many travelers take vacations for fun and others go because their job demands it, but no matter why you go the ebook Save On Airfare Secrets manual can help you save money. It’s not a travel guide like the books that tell you all about the places you want to visit it’s actually an amazing guide to all the travel industry tips so you can save money and that means more money for more vacations.

There are so many things to think about before a vacation including all your tickets, travel insurance, visas, vaccinations and sorting out what to do with the pet pooch while you are away. It’s all worth it in the end because you get to go to where you want to go and do what you want to do. A very important componant of vacations is that you can escape from your mundane routine and be more free to enjoy life to its fullest.

You can be yourself when you are on vacation and can enjoy the option of learning about foreign communities and lifestyles. If you are a food lover you can really enjoy the myriad of cuisines on offer around the world and introduce your taste buds to new ingredients. Music lovers can follow the music festivals around the world and there are many subcultures to be enjoyed along the way.

Many diverse interests are well-supported in places located in even remote, but beautiful parts of the world, like diving, horseback riding, mountain hiking, ocean swimming, snow skiing, and yes, especially shopping for all kinds of souvenirs. Day spas are popular and attract those looking for a bit of pampering to add to the holiday experience and there has been a surge in holiday makers opting for cooking classes to learn the local cuisine for a few take home ideas to add to the recipe file.

One of the more popular ways to travel is by offering free help to a favorite charity, including saving the whales, assisting underprivilged kids of poor nations, taking care of rhinos, constructing affordable houses, or being a nurse for the older population, all of which are admirable ways to spend a vacation and to express your humanity by helping someone or something else in need. A nice balance would be to lend your assistance for a portion of your trip and sightsee during the other portion. You will make a difference and come home feeling good in many different ways.

Oh Yes! Even though it is a blast to go to other states or countries, and sometimes you might even want to stay, a lot of people will tell you the best feeling is when you arrive back home.

Happy travels!

Discover Lanzarote – The Island of Fire

By LanzaroteGuidebook On August 31st, 2009
Beach at Papagayo

Beach at Papagayo

The small Canary Island of Lanzarote is located just eighty miles off the coast of Morocco.  A location that creates a great climate all year round – characterised by very low rainfall and temperatures that rarely fall below 20 Celsius.  Even during the winter months.  Making the island an ideal holiday destination whatever the time of year.

This clement climate – allied with over ninety breathtaking beaches – helps Lanzarote attract around 1.5 million foreign tourists every year. The bulk of them from the UK, Eire and Germany.  Whilst a sizeable number of visitors from the Spanish mainland flock to the island during the summer months in order to swap the furnace like heat of the Iberian Peninsula for the cooler climes of the Canaries.

Yet despite the large number of visitors Lanzarote retains a tranquil and unspoilt air.  High rise construction and ad billboards were all banned back in the 1970´s.  Thanks to a campaigning local artist called César Manrique – who sought to protect his birthplace from the worst excesses of tourist development.  Whilst the three main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca are well contained on the south east coast.  Leaving the rest of the island much as nature intended.

Volcanic Lanzarote

Volcanic Lanzarote

Which is just as well as Lanzarote is home to a large number of natural wonders.  Such as the awe inspiring Timanfaya National Park.  Where tourists can view hundreds of now dormant volcanoes and mile after mile of twisted lava flow.  The legacy of a massive eruption that rocked the island for six years during the 1730´s.

The scenery here is extremely surreal and is often likened to the surface of another planet.  Indeed Apollo 13 astronauts were shown visuals of Timanfaya before they embarked upon their own lunar landing mission.  Whilst numerous science fiction films – such as Krull and One Million Years BC were shot on location here too.

Elsewhere on the island, Manrique created a series of unique tourist attractions by fusing this volcanic scenery with his own creative genius.  Resulting in sights such as the Jameos del Agua – a huge underground grotto and concert venue fashioned out of a collapsed lava tunnel.  And his own incredible home – now the César Manrique Foundation – which he built over five bubbles in the lava flow.

Lanzarote is serviced by all of the leading low cost flight operators in the UK and is also now accessible from the US.  With flights recently inaugarated from Miami to the neighbouring island of Tenerife.

Accommodation in Lanzarote is of a high standard.  With good quality hotels available in all of the main resorts.  Whilst the best selection of self catering properties can be found in the centre and south of the island.  With villas in Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca proving very popular with the growing number of holidaymakers that like to book their own breaks direct online.

The Mapes Hotel: Reno’s Lost Art Deco Jewel

By Ross Everett On August 31st, 2009

The Mapes Hotel in Reno, Nevada met its demise on Superbowl Sunday of 2000 when 75 pounds of explosives packed inside the structure’s support columns brought it to the ground. The controlled demolition came despite years of effort by a number of groups within the community to preserve the building with lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots lobbying efforts. The National Turst for Historic Preservation even took up the cause, challenging the destruction in a lawsuit that eventually reached the Nevada Supreme Court.

While the logic and necessity of demolishing the Mapes is very questionable, one thing that is certain is that the hotel was an important part of Northern Nevada history. The Mapes opened in 1947 and with it ushered in a new era for casino gambling and the state of Nevada. Despite some historical revisionism that suggests that the modern era began in Las Vegas with Bugsy Siegel’s famed Flamingo, the Mapes was actually the first building in America to have a hotel, casino and live entertainment under the same roof. The Mapes attracted countless celebrities who’d make it their home when business brought them to Northern Nevada–this included movie stars like Clark Gable, TV stars like the cast of ‘Bonanza’ and political power brokers like infamous anti-Communist crusader Joseph McCarthy.

In the 50s and 60s it became, along with Lake Tahoes Cal-Neva Lodge the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The top floor, window-walled Sky Room showcased performances by the legends: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason, Louis Prima, Mae West, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis, Jr., and the Marx Brothers among others. Subsequent years were not kind to downtown Reno but the Mapes continued to do well during the 60’s and 70’s. The hotel finally closed in 1982, due more to financial difficulties experienced by the Mapes family caused by one of their other Northern Nevada gaming properties than anything else.

Reno has yet to experience the sort of growth that has been seen in Southern Nevada, and for that reason the destruction of the Mapes is more open to debate than the hotel demolitions to the south. Even the demolition of The Sands”perhaps the most historically significant casino in the state”is hard to argue against given the inability of such a small property to compete in the current Las Vegas marketplace and in light of the value of the mid-strip real estate.

That’s not the case in Reno, where vacant land and/or buildings ripe for redevelopment are abundant downtown and in the other casino areas of the city. The official reason that the Mapes had to come down was that the city needed the land to expand its vision for downtown redevelopment. While this is certainly a much needed effort, to suggest that the existence of the Mapes was a barrier is absurd. In fact, many of the proposals rejected by the city would have gone a long way to enhance the revitalization of downtown Reno and included artists lofts, office space and other mixed used properties. Despite receiving a number of viable concepts for the Mapes Building, the City Redevelopment Authority rejected all of them and the Mapes was destined for demolition.

The role of the City Redevelopment Authority was questioned throughout the process. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was on a prime location between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. A number of sound financial proposals were presented that would preserve the integrity of the structure including condominiums, office space, and perhaps most viable, upscale senior apartments. Oddly, all of these proposals were turned down by the citys Redevelopment Agency which continued to maintain that demolition was the only viable option despite copious evidence to the contrary.

Following the 2000 demolition, the lot remained vacant for over a year until a temporary ice skating rink was hastily constructed the following winter. The site now houses a permanent ice skating rink which, while not a bad use for the land, isn’t the sort of game changing improvement suggested by the City Redevelopment Agency and their adamant insistence that the building be demolished. To the contrary, it appears they had no specific plan or even general idea of what to do with the land but for some reason wanted to see the hotel come down. This has led to all manner of speculation, ranging from financial self interest to a rumor that the structure was ‘haunted’ and needed to be destroyed to forestall future paranormal activity in Washoe County. Whatever the reason, the city of Reno lost a valuable landmark that played a significant part in the economic growth of the entire state.

Portable GPS Systems

By Tracey Charles On August 31st, 2009

Personal navigation, vehicle tracking and public transportation have changed a lot with the evolution of the new GPS technology. With a simple GPS receiver you can access the orbiting satellites and get information on the current location, the destination and the shortest route to reach it. Moreover, new GPS devices can give information on traffic conditions, restaurants, hotels, ATMs, gas stations and points-of-interest for the map on which you navigate. Reliable, discreet and convenient, the new GPS units represent the beginning of another age in the field of communications and technological development. Depending on the manufacturer, the features incorporated in a GPS unit can differ a lot.

The way to get to a destination by car? Designed to help with navigation of more complex systems such as air crafts, GPS devices match all the requirements of a traveler. GPS for autos are products that receive and decode signals from a complex network of satellites that permit you to determine the current car location and help you set the route for a destination. GPS receivers are available in several designs, formats and models, with a higher or lower user-friendly rate. Cheap systems are easy to plug in and store, but they can be harder to operate and not precisely top of the range. More quality incorporates more cash.

The car layout is incredibly important when trying to decide on a certain model. Some models of GPS for cars include monitors for map display, but the presence of the monitor on the dashboard could be uncomfortable with some car designs. You have to make sure that the device does not block the air vents and that it does not ruin the view from the passenger’s seat. GPS for cars therefore have to be chosen so as to match the dashboard features and the entire interior car design for maximum of efficiency and convenience.

Multiple features! This is one other vital criterion of selecting GPS for cars. There are folks who like to have many ways available to get information on the simple way to reach destination. Some GPS receivers will help you navigate by using the data from a personal address book, others decide on the location right from the map, while others can operate by crossover or directly by address. Likewise, following the same line of thought , you can purchase a GPS for vehicles that may give both graphical and vocal directions. Besides verbal directions, the GPS monitor displays arrows to indicate the direction, determines the position of the automobile as related to the destination and shows the name of the street.

There are GPS for cars that provide information on points of interest, airports, ATMs, hotels, restaurants and many other sites. Normally, such a device is a bit more expensive, but when you travel a lot and need to go from place to place, information is crucial. Moreover, the GPS device can get updates on the points-of-interest specific to a certain geographical area. You may be at a loss about what GPS for cars to buy when there are so many models to choose from. The best way to sort things out is by going to a retailer that has demo units in-store so that you can check how the system works for yourself. Then, you’ll know what to shop for!

CompTIA IT Study Considerations Considered

By Jason Kendall On August 31st, 2009

Network and PC support technicians are constantly in demand in the UK, as companies have come to depend upon their knowledge and ability to fix and repair. Because of the multifaceted levels of technological advances, greater numbers of competent professionals are required to specialise in the various different areas we’ve come to rely on.

‘In-Centre workshop days’ get pushed as an important element by some training schools. When you chat with the majority of IT students who’ve attended a few, you’ll find they generally end up being seen as a waste of time due to many reasons:

* A lot of travelling to and from the centre - usually 100’s of miles.

* Mon-Fri access for classes can be usual, and with 2-3 days to book off work, this is usually problematic for a lot of trainees who are working.

* Most of us find four weeks vacation allowance is not really enough. Take away over half of it for study workshops and watch how much harder things become.

* Training workshops typically get over subscribed.

* Tension is often caused in mixed classes as different students want to work at different paces.

* Rising travel prices - travelling to and from the training centre plus accommodation can really add up each time you attend. Assuming just five to ten classes at a cost of 35 pounds for a single over-night room, plus 40 pounds petrol and food at 15 pounds, that becomes a minimum of four to nine hundred pounds of costs that we weren’t expecting.

* We all enjoy our privacy. We should never risk giving up any lift up the ladder due to us while we’re training.

* Most of us find it difficult to ask questions in a room full of other trainees - who wants to look like they’re the only one who doesn’t get it?

* If your work takes you away from home, it’s a fact of life that workshops are now difficult to get to - and yet, they’ve been paid for in advance.

It really does make so much more sense to study when it suits you — not the training company - and make use of interactive videos of instructors teaching a class. Study can happen anywhere that suits. If you’ve got a laptop, you could catch some sun outside while you learn. If you have any problems then get onto the live 24×7 support. You don’t have to worry about any note-taking - every lesson is laid out for you already. Anything you want to do over, you’ve got it all. What could be simpler: You avoid travelling and wasting time and money; and of course you get a much more stress-free study environment.

Have a conversation with almost any skilled advisor and they can normally tell you many terrible tales of students who’ve been sold completely the wrong course for them. Stick to an experienced industry advisor that digs deep to uncover the best thing for you - not for their retirement-fund! It’s very important to locate the very best place to start for you. It’s worth remembering, if you’ve got any qualifications that are related, then you can sometimes expect to start at a different point than someone new to the industry. If this is going to be your first crack at an IT exam then it may be wise to cut your teeth on some basic PC skills training first.

Looking around, we find a plethora of jobs and positions available in Information Technology. Picking the right one out of this complexity often proves challenging. After all, if you have no understanding of the IT sector, what chance is there for you to know what someone in a particular field actually does day-to-day? Let alone arrive at what accreditation path will be most suitable for a successful result. Deliberation over these issues is most definitely required if you need to uncover the right answer for you:

* Your personality type and interests - what working tasks you like and dislike.

* What sort of time-frame do you want for your training?

* How important is salary to you - is it very important, or is day-to-day enjoyment higher up on your list of priorities?

* Some students don’t fully understand the time demanded to gain all the necessary accreditation.

* You need to appreciate the differences between each area of training.

For the majority of us, sifting through each of these concepts tends to require the help of an experienced pro that can investigate each area with you. And we’re not only talking about the accreditations - you also need to understand the commercial requirements of the market as well.

Reaching For the Stars

By James Pynn On August 31st, 2009

Visiting the lush Emerald City should entail a visit to the iconic Space Needle. It is, after all, a modern architectural marvel. Built for the 1962 World’s Fare, the Needle still stands out as the defining landmark for Seattle, much the same way the Transamerica Pyramid does in San Francisco. This luminous landmark on the horizon punctuates every stay in the city.

Though the area in and around Seattle has been inhabited for approximately 4,000 years, it was not until 1850 or so that the first European settlers arrived. The indigenous Duwamish and Suquamish tribes initially tried to seek a peaceful co-habitation with the settlers, but the tribes were forcibly removed from the area and resettled in the Port Madison Reservation. A good many Duwamish natives stayed in the city, however, refusing to be moved.

Seattle has seen a number of industries take root and flourish. Though some industries fail, most notably the presence of Boeing in the mid-1970s, the majority of them, especially the technological firms, have flourished in Seattle. Indeed, Seattle has vied with Silicon Valley in terms of technological wherewithal. Companies like Amazon.com, Real Networks, and T-Mobile call Seattle home.

The company that would focus worldwide attention on the Emerald City had nothing to do with technology, but everything to do with coffee. The original Starbucks was opened in Pike Place Market in 1971, where it still remains. The corporate headquarters moved into the old Sears Roebuck building and renamed the building The Starbucks Center. Currently, Starbucks is the single largest coffee company in the world, with 16,120 stores in 49 countries.

The beauty of Seattle speaks for itself. Situated at he mouth of Puget Sound, the city enjoys the lush verdant canopy that has made the Pacific Northwest so famous. Indeed, one of the city’s numerous nicknames is “The Emerald City,” a fitting tribute not only to its surrounding beauty, but the extensive city planning that has enervated it with numerous parks and beltways.

There are numerous Seattle hotels to pick from when planning a vacation westward. pick well, because the last thing you want to spend your time on in Seattle is getting around. Find a hotel nestled right in the city.
